Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi moved that the Export Control (Animals) Amendment (Northern Hemisphere Summer Prohibition) Rules 2022, made under the Export Control Act 2020, be disallowed.
The motion would disallow in instrument introduced in April 2022 that partially wound back the ban on live sheep exports to, or through, the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere Summer by:
-
- Permitting live sheep exports to Persian Gulf destinations from 22 May to 31 May given additional conditions to mitigate heat stress risks were met; and
- Permitting live sheep exports to or through the Red Sea from 1 to 14 June.
The motion was voted down with 47 against and 12 in favour.
