I fully support the call from St Edmund's & St Clare's for better road safety measures on Canberra Ave.
With some 2,000 students and their families impacted, this has to be a priority. It may not have stopped what happened last week but is sensible and long overdue.
Canberra Avenue being an arterial road is a poor excuse from the ACT Government - it hasn't stopped them making Northbourne Ave 40km and not even syncing up the lights. Safety of young people should come first.
The Federal Government should partner with the ACT Government to provide funding to address this issue.
The ACT community has rallied behind the two boys so tragically injured last week - now it's time for governments to step up and do their part.
Political pork-barrelling of road funding must end - it should be allocated based on need.
Analysis of insurance claims shows that over a decade Canberra Avenue is the fifth most dangerous road in the country.
In light of this tragic incident, I believe there may also be merit in asking NSW and ACT police to consider reviewing their crossborder pursuit policies and protocols to see if there is scope to strengthen any further.
We need more action on this issue of road safety and we need it now.
