This Bill expands the functions of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA), giving the agency authority to coordinate action on silica.
What the Bill does
The increase in silicosis and other silica-related diseases has been deeply concerning and has raised the need for urgent, coordinated national action to improve the safety of people at work - and to better support affected workers and their families.
The Bill would broaden the current remit of ASEA to include silica, changing its name to the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency.
ASSEA would develop, promote and report on a Silica National Strategic Plan and track the progress of jurisdictions against nationally agreed targets.
