First Term Wins
Humanitarian Visas for Gazans
As a result of my advocacy, the government agreed to grant three-year humanitarian visas to people in Australia who fled Gaza, providing them with stability, work, and study rights, matching support given to Ukrainians.
Prevented unfair migration law changes
I helped stop government changes that would have made visa appeals more difficult, securing a key win to extend appeal deadlines for people in immigration detention and protect fairness in Australia’s migration review system.
Protected refugees from migration ballots
When the government introduced a ballot system for the new Pacific Engagement Visa, I secured an amendment to ensure refugees are never subjected to a visa lottery under these provisions.
Genuine consultation on the Pacific Engagement Visa
I secured a commitment from the government to ensure Pacific diaspora community leaders, settlement agencies and family and domestic violence specialist services are formally consulted in the implementation of the new Pacific Engagement Visa.
Fair pay for settlement workers
I secured increased funding for refugee settlement services, ensuring workers received a pay rise to keep up with inflation.
Over 70 visa outcomes for individual Canberrans
Australia’s visa processing system is often slow, cumbersome and unfair. The enquiry lines have long waits and often can’t give specific advice or updates, meaning people are left wondering what’s happening with their application. I’ve worked hard to advocate for Canberrans to get fast, fair outcomes on their visa applications, resulting in over 70 positive outcomes - reuniting families, giving stability to long term residents and securing the skills the ACT needs.
What I’m Fighting For
A fair and compassionate approach to refugees and asylum seekers
I will keep pushing for a fair and compassionate refugee determination system, including a pathway to permanency for those affected by the flawed and unfair fast-track process. I am continuing to advocate for a refugee status determination system that is fast, compassionate, and fully compliant with Australia’s international obligations. I am calling for an end to offshore processing and a refugee resettlement approach that upholds human rights and prevents deaths at sea.
A consistent approach to humanitarian emergencies
Australia needs an emergency humanitarian visa framework that ensures fair and consistent responses to crises like Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan and ensures the right supports are in place to provide those fleeing violence with the care they need in the community. Australians with family members and friends living in countries affected by conflicts and emergencies should not have to be at the mercy of the politics of the day when it comes to determining the fate of their loved ones.
A long-term population plan for Australia
I support an evidence-based, long-term population plan that ensures sustainable and equitable growth while upholding human rights, family unity, and environmental protection. This includes tackling housing affordability, infrastructure, and economic development and supporting new and emerging communities.
We must also manage workforce needs and regional growth to harness migration and create opportunities for all Australians. The current politicisation of migration harms communities and undermines our shared values. We must take a measured, evidence-based approach to migration planning. One that recognises its economic and social benefits while ensuring fairness, sustainability, and strong support systems for all.
I recently proposed in the Senate that a select committee be established to investigate this. You can view more details about this on page 11 of the Senate notice paper here. I will continue to push for the establishment of this Committee so that these important issues can be examined in detail.
