Gas companies are making billions and Australians are being ripped off.
While gas companies export our resources and rake in record profits, they haven't paid a cent in resource tax on offshore LNG exports. In fact, the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT), the tax that’s supposed to ensure Australians get a fair return, is failing.
Loopholes and weak settings mean gas companies are dodging their fair share. The Albanese Government made weak reforms in the last parliament with the support of the Greens, but the PRRT is now forecast to deliver barely half of what was expected. That’s billions of dollars we’re missing - money that should be funding hospitals, schools, disaster relief, and the transition to clean energy.
Meanwhile, the climate crisis is getting worse, and ordinary Australians are being asked to do more with less.
This isn’t just a policy failure - it’s a national disgrace.
It’s time to make gas companies pay their fair share. It’s time to fix the PRRT and make it deliver for the Australian people.
Add your name to demand the Albanese Government strengthen and increase the PRRT - and stop letting big gas rob us blind.
To the Prime Minister and the Albanese Government,
Australians are being denied a fair share of the wealth generated from our own natural resources.
Gas companies are making huge profits from exporting gas, while the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) continues to fail. Loopholes and structural weaknesses in the tax system mean these corporations pay little to no tax, even as Australians face rising living costs, underfunded public services, and worsening climate impacts.
The PRRT was supposed to be reformed. But two years on, it is forecast to deliver barely half of the revenue originally promised. This is not good enough.
We call on the Albanese Government to urgently repair and strengthen the PRRT to ensure Australians receive a fair return from gas exports.
That revenue should be used to support budget repair, strengthen essential services, and help communities deal with the growing costs of the climate crisis.
It’s time to put the public interest ahead of fossil fuel profits.
We urge you to act now.
